Advisors are competitive by nature, and to stay on top of their game, they need to be aware and well-versed in the latest trends and industry developments. A convenient way to do so is by reading industry blogs and listening to podcasts.

There are hundreds if not thousands to choose from, making it difficult to separate the worthwhile reads and listens from the rest. We’ve taken some time to sort through what’s available and most popular among advisors and came up with this list. In this article, we will focus on podcasts.

These podcasts each offer unique perspectives on various topics related to financial advisors and running an RIA, as well as the broader economy at large.

SEC’s Your Money

Your Money offers a consumer-level view of finance and economics, which is helpful when subscribing to topics that may interest your clients. We’re well versed in how finance works but might not be able to explain it in a way our clients will understand in Plain English. Your Money might be a way to solve that, as each episode is downloadable directly from the SEC website without having to “subscribe.”

Innovating Advice

If you’d like a global perspective on financial advising, Kate Holmes’ Innovating Advice is a great podcast that talks to financial advisors worldwide about how they became successful in their markets. Who knows, you might find an idea that works for your business thanks to the story of an advisor thousands of miles away.

Tortoise QuickTake

Some of us don’t have 30-60 minutes to spend listening to a full podcast. While the name of this podcast might make you think twice if you’re in a rush, the name is a contradiction as it squeezes a lot of content into a short podcast, often less than 10 minutes in length. Tortoise QuickTake aims to update its subscribers on trending finance topics, often focusing on the news’ relationship to the energy sector. If you are interested in energy trading, we recommend subscribing to this short podcast.

Standard Deviations

For advisors that appreciate a more intellectual look at finance, Standard Deviations is hosted by Dr. Daniel Crosby, a psychologist and behavioral finance expert who is the Chief Behavioral Officer at Orion Advisor Solutions. Dr. Crosby’s first book, Personal Benchmark: Integrating Behavioral Finance and Investment Management, was a New York Times bestseller. His second book, The Laws of Wealth, was named the best investment book of 2017 by the Axiom Business Book Awards. His third book, The Behavioral Investor, is an in-depth look at how sociology, psychology and neurology all impact investment decision-making. Dr. Crosby speaks to various guests on topics to understand the relationship between money and human behavior.

Between Now and Success

Host Steve Sanduski has founded two financial services companies, wrote several New York Times bestsellers, and travels worldwide to educate advisors on how to succeed in financial advising. Steve’s guests share their journeys and lessons learned along the way – that period between now and success – which new advisors will find especially useful as they navigate those first weeks, months, and years as an independent RIA.

The Advisor Lab

Seven Group’s The Advisor Lab is right up your alley for advisors that hate marketing. The entire podcast is devoted to helping advisors develop innovative marketing and communication strategies to get the word out. Guests include marketing experts and thought leaders from across the industry. For most of us, marketing will not come naturally. Seven Group is a financial advisor marketing platform – and their podcast aims to offer suggestions on how to not only use their tools but step up their marketing game.

Framework

Hosted by Jamie Hopkins and Ana Trujillo Limón, Framework aims to help financial advisors by taking a deep dive into financial planning, practice management, marketing, and business development, new legislation, and executive leadership. Each podcast includes an interview with an industry expert, often with a general theme. Past topics include diversity, mental health in the finance industry, and tips to make it through uncertainty in the markets.
